South African gold production drops in 1Q'2001
Story Filed: Monday, June 11, 2001 2:26 PM EST

Jun 11, 2001 (AFRICAN MINING MONITOR via COMTEX) -- South Africa's gold output was 3.16m troy ounces in 1Q'2001, a decrease of 9.2% from the previous quarter's 3.48m oz, according to new figures released by the country's Chamber of Mines.

The chamber says that the drop was caused by public holidays during the Christmas and New Year period, strikes and the downscaling of operations. Gold production fell 7.9% when compared with 1Q'2000's output of 3.43m oz.

South Africa is the world's biggest gold producer, attributing approximately 16% of its foreign income to the precious metal.
