Computer Chip Supplier Exar ( $22) Cuts Outlook 35%

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Exar Corp. (NasdaqNM:EXAR - news) on Tuesday revised downward its first-quarter outlook as the supplier of computer chips said it felt the pinch of a slowdown in demand in the communications industry.

The Fremont, California-based company said it now expects earnings per share for the first quarter ending June 30 of between 2 cents and 4 cents on revenues that are seen 35 percent to 45 percent below the $21.6 million reported for the fourth quarter.

Analysts, on average, were expecting Exar to post first-quarter earnings of 7 cents a share, according to research firm Thomson Financial/First Call.

``Visibility in the market continues to be very limited as customers work through inventory and demand issues,'' said Don Ciffone, Exar's president and chief executive. ``This difficult environment has resulted in ongoing pressure on bookings and backlog.''

Exar shares closed at $23.02 on Monday, up from a year low of $15.38 but only about a third of its 52-week high of $64.19
