"Notice that the guy made the statement in the article is AMD's Far East guy and most likely the guy meant 30% market share in Far East(exclude Japan). The reporter somehow did not make the distinction of Far East Vs. worldwide.

Certainly this AM's market reaction lends support to your interpretation...Just have to see if other news sources fill in the interpretative gap!!! In any event, given 21% market share in Q1, it would not seem an impossibility if Athlon 4 catches fire (i.e additional OEM's) to achieve 30% assuming continued steady growth in the consumer space!!!

"<<30% Market Share by Year End>>
The president of AMD Japan said a few weeks back that he expected 30% market share in Japan by the the end of 01.

Notice that the guy made the statement in the article is AMD's Far East guy and most likely the guy meant 30% market share in Far East(exclude Japan). The reporter somehow did not make the distinction of Far East Vs. worldwide.

Both Jerry and Hector thought that 30% in 2001 is unlikely and they talked about worldwide market share."

From the release the following quotes:

AMD sees 30 pct "WORLD" market share by end 2001
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD), the world's largest microchip maker after Intel (NasdaqNM:INTC - news), is on track to achieve its stated goal of a 30 percent "GLOBAL" market share by year-end, a company official said on Tuesday.

``We are seeing a good sign that we are pretty much in that range "ACROSS THE WORLD,'' he said.

The use of the terms "world", "global" and "across the world" would seem to strongly suggest that this AMD representative is talking about all AMD markets including the far east...It'll be interesting to see if AMD provides any additional insights in the very near term!!! but a global 30% market share by year end isn't out of the question if "Athlon 4 and server/workstaion new products" can contribute revenues at an incremental rate of 20% (i.e. $200 million) by year end...

Correction about 30% market share.
AMD says they will have capacity in place (as opposed to capturing) to capture 30% market share.

An AMD spokesman in Austin, Texas, said that the company has, in light of flagging demand for personal computers, scaled back expectations from an earlier stated goal of 30 percent market share, to having the capacity in place to produce 30 percent of the world's microprocessors by the end of the year.

He was correcting a statement made earlier on Tuesday by an official at a Singapore-based subsidiary, who said the company was in line to reach a 30 percent market share by year-end.
