Gottfried, the idea is that preventing pirating would increase the profit margins for software developers. The money in turn would lure more software developers into the market. This would foster more competition, which then in turn lowers prices and promotes innovation.

Of course with Microsoft, talking about competition and innovation in the software world is kind of pointless. Oh well.

Gottfried,

It's not a theft if it's for maintaining your knowledge on SW evolution.

Most software companies distribute full functioning trial versions of their software.

It's ridiculous to pay for Office if you write 2 or 3 letters per years using Office.

Maybe there should be some pay-per-use pricing for software for occasional users.
