Jim, I think part of the reason for using Quake 3 in benchmarking is that it is very easy to use for FPS measurements and the results are quantifyable and reproducible. Also, Quake 3 has a lot of 3D features which can be considered a good cross-section of features in most new 3D games out there.

Personally, I haven't played a 3D game on my PC for months now. My favorite PC games at the moment are 2D strategy and/or role-playing games. High-performance processors can improve game responsiveness, but they're definitely not required. And besides, how do you measure 2D game "responsiveness" anyway?

<I'm still trying to find the "memory bandwidth" program so I can try it myself.>

Why don't you find for us ANY program that you use yourself which absolutely positively needs a 1 GHz processor or faster? All this FUD over Pentium 4 having "unbalanced" performance characteristics is nonsense if you only run spreadsheets, or if you can't tell the difference between 56 and 60 frames per second.

Re: Does everyone play Quake? Are there other games available? <G> Tom used to love monster truck madness...what will he come up with next?

Many FPS games use the QuakeIII engine and henceforth, the benchmark results would apply to many users. Also, QuakeIII itself is very popular.
