I have loaned gold.

My father used it as collateral on a home loan as have many others. Yes, one needs look a bit harder than a like deposit with cash, but opportunities broadly exist. For the Joe Average Investor a reduction in rate on his home loan is the same as money earned though it may be of a lesser amount.
