My father's family came from Latvia, which was quasi- independent between the wars, but had been part of the Russian Empire, and was annexed by Stalin outright in 1940. They came from little villages near Riga, and my great- grandparents emigrated to the United States a little after the turn of the century. There happened to be a community of Latvian Jews in the Philadelphia area, which is how my grandparents got to know one another. Anyway, the Riga area is one of the first to have been hit by the SS Einsatzgruppen. If you recall, in the first phase of the Final Solution, they had Jews dig mass graves, disrobe, and kneel. Then they shot them in the back of the head, pitched them forward, shoveled in lime, and covered the pit. Had my family stayed, they would likely have been wiped out.

On my mother's side of the family, well, I have an Italian Catholic grandfather, an English Catholic great- grandfather, and an English Methodist great- grandmother (my maternal grandmother was raised a Catholic). So, as you can see, this is all of more than passing interest to me......
