doesn't the hourly rate vary by craft, and also by skill level?

Of course. A simple clean up guy just starting out will get $8/hour. If you own some tools ($100 at the most) and have even rudimentary skills you can make $15/hour. My husband learned on the job. In the non-union construction world nobody teaches you anything. If someone asks if you can do something you say yes and then fake it until you figure it out. If you are lucky somebody like my husband will come along and say, "Look asshole, that's not the way to use a screw gun....let me show you how to do it." Think about that the next time you walk around a commercial office building. That the building was largely put together by a bunch of guys pretending they know how to do something.

It's hard work, I know because I'm the one who helps him on our own projects. You try holding 15 foot board over your head for a few minutes! The best money is if you do "piece work" which is getting paid by the foot or sheet. John used to do that when he was younger. It's like working for yourself and people tend to work a lot harder when they know they will make more money. He and his partner would kill themselves because the money was so good. One year they did nothing but ceilings and made a bundle until the guys upstairs discovered how much they were making and lowered the rate. Always seems no matter what biz you are in outsize profits are always short lived so you got to get it when the getting is good.
