stac,

re: "It will come down to discretionary dollars very soon with the price of cable subscription going up not only that but the "free web" is going by the wayside, monthly subscriptions Also people will actually have to shell out for software too."

Every consumer products company competes for discretionary dollars. If somebody comes out with a really innovative toaster oven will folks stop buying PC's? Of the 1000's of products that people buy you are saying that they will stop buying PC's because cable access prices go up? Maybe they won't buy the toaster oven.

PC's are a depreciating asset. In the next year or two, all those Y2K PC's will be fully depreciated, and corporations will be looking to replace them. As to the consumer, a year from now when Intel and AMD (maybe) are selling 3 GHz computers, a 500 MHz machine is going to seem incredibly slow. WAG, 75% of PC's are not capable of running W-XP. It's been the same with every upgrade cycle, yet every time there are a bunch of folks like you that say nobody will ever need a faster PC.

You are blowing a bunch of stale hot air, the same bad old argument that's been made for ten years.
