I wanted a cowboy
in the worst of ways, to take me off to distant prairie
and play the best of days.

To ride and rope and call out high
to eagles far and wide.

Ride and rope till day is done
fences patched, fences mended,
fences holding in
the cattle meant for distant places
far off clothe the man.

Fouls and lambs and chicks and pups,
ducklings, kittens, calves. Beans and coffee, pots and pans,
fire could reclaim.

Horizontal scapes of gold with oasis patch of green.

Herringbone pattern barnwood wall that warms by winter fire,
from buildings meant to last an age that came and went with haste.

But oh the fate of dreams come true was not to be,
I meant,
that here I be and there my dreams went gallantly amiss.
