Lindy,

This kind of information exchange is only made possible by the internet.

It's easier for us retired farts to use our time that way than for the folks who are still funding your and my Social Security fund. :)

Your story about the author reminded me to run a search on a trombonist. (Thanks!) Sure enough, the guy has a web page.

There's a unique series of coincidences involved. The trombonist lives in England and was hired by a symphonic band in Illinois to play a series of solos. There is no way he could have known that I played in that band for several years three decades ago. I also can't imagine that he was aware that this particular band has been playing my arrangements for thirty years and was the very first band to regularly perform them. My understanding is that he asked the conductor purely on a whim if he could somehow contact me so they can perform my arrangement of Londonderry Air.

I have no idea how he heard of the piece, much less heard it. (I e-mailed him to find out and look forward to his response.) The piece had never been performed in public. I can only conclude that he got my arrangement confused with a more well known arrangement of the same tune written by my brother, yet another coincidence.

Regardless, the soloist and the band performed it (coincidentally!) at my college alma mater last month and liked it enough that they will perform it at a festival in France later this month. Yet despite that he's playing my music on two continents in as many months, I know far more about him than he knows about me because he has a web page and I don't.

P. S. He probably has a cell phone too, one of those wacky GSM thingies.
