Potatoes push up inflation

A MASSIVE increase in the price of potatoes has helped push the inflation rate to its highest level for two years.

The floods which washed out crops across much of the countryside last year have now had a dramatic impact on Britain’s supermarket shelves. Shoppers are paying 71 per cent more for potatoes compared with a year ago and 41 per cent more for fresh vegetables in general. According to government statistics released yesterday, food prices went up in May by their highest monthly rate for 19 years. As a result the underlying rate of inflation, which excludes mortgage interest payments, climbed sharply by 0.4 per cent to 2.4 per cent last month
