Very interesting. I knew about Judah Benjamin, and some of the "atmosphere", but not in so much detail. It is true enough, populists are more likely to be anti- semitic than patricians. I am sure that was true in the North as well, at least with the better educated, middle- class Jews of early emigration, before the large influx of peasants from Eastern Europe. For example, in "Our Crowd", about the German- Jewish- American financiers in New York in the late 19th century, it turns out that many of them intermarried into WASP society pretty easily.....An interesting sidelight is that the museum mentioned is right around the corner from where my wife works.......
