More like cutting off a nose to spite a face. Why give up reciprocal rights to roam? Dumb.

If Verizon does not adopt WCDMA, do you really think there will be no roaming agreement between it and Vodafone? I don't think so.

the GSM Alliance could invalidate that operators world-wide roaming agreements with other GSM Alliance members!!

This sounds like restraint of trade. I doubt this would be legal in the US but I do not know about elsewhere.
