Freedom of Information Panel Reviews Jovin Murder Files

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) A state Freedom of Information Commission official is reviewing New Haven police documents about the murder of Yale University student Suzanne Jovin to decide if records should be made public.

The Hartford Courant and Jeff Mitchell, a high school friend of James Van de Velde, who is among several suspects, have filed complaints with the commission. They are seeking the release of the
file and the 911 tape reporting Jovin's slaying.

They contend New Haven Police Chief Melvin Wearing violated the Freedom of Information Act by withholding documents.

The city of New Haven and state's attorney's office are fighting release of the documents, saying it would compromise investigations.

Commission attorney Barbara Housen received 4,476 pages of documents and the 911 recording May 18. A commission spokesman said she will require two or three weeks to review the file.

Jovin was stabbed to death Dec. 4, 1998, in a case that remains unsolved. Police say have ``a pool of suspects,'' but have named only Van de Velde, who was Jovin's instructor.

He has not been charged.

Van de Velde denies he killed Jovin and has accused the New Haven police of botching the investigation.
