I'm not too keen on letting my INTC stock be at the mercy of passivity. RE: "In fact, it's really not a role of government at any level to be pushing for this, is it?" Phone companies were legislated to provide phone service to homes, when the phone systems first started out. RE: "but they don't necessarily see a profit" Sounds like an entry for government involvement. RE: " It's a matter of local and national companies deciding when to put cable modems" Ma & Pa cable operators are quite fragmented and they feed the pipes to the big cable operators. I wasn't originally aware of this because the consumer deals with the large brandname companies that own the relationships but tend to hide the small operators behind the scenes. RE: "Part of this will come from customers squawking loudly that they want cable modems." The folks in Paly squawked pretty loud for it to no avail. (A friend of mine who is an industry telco expert is on Paly's telecom committee to try and help the city out, and he explained to me some aspects of the dynamics of the cable operators.) I forgot what they settled on (maybe it's still in progress.) They had goals of fiber for Paly - but I seem to recall there was a cost issue there they couldn't pass in the community (surprising when you think of Paly). RE: "Having Intel's lobbyist in Washington making noise will not help." Maybe having the communications business go down the tubes will. And the chips too. Has to be something really bad enough that motivates congress to initiate tax cuts for telco and pc industry, sort of like the energy tax cuts. Maybe the next president will be a high-tech exec. RE: "In some sense, the situation is like having a sophisticated Ferrari factory in Italy, but only rutted roads to drive them on. (A situation not far from the truth in Italy of the 1950s.) " No different than the phone system's early beginnings. RE: "Grove made an interesting ...is too obvious for me to write about." I liked Grove's proposal for a tax cut to spur PC buyers.
