Noranda is a company which has businesses in a lot of the base metals ... they got the shares when NEM bought out another gold miner they owned. They had intended to sell before NEM acquired the smaller miner ...

I expect they sold for a number of reasons

1) They had a large profit
2) They are in the midst of or completing either significant upgrades to existing aluminum plants or outright purchases of "finishing" capacity
3) It was currently less profitable than other businesses

They are putting money into the gold exploration side, but it never was a main business for them.

Again, I think it is more significant who bought -- a big bank.
