but even worse if you made good investing decisions and lost all of your money because your broker went belly up.

Explain to me how selecting a broker that carries no insurance on the assets in your brokerage account and also goes belly up is a good investment decision. Come to think of it, that's the sort of decision I could cause Id to make.
