For a long time the majority supported the war. "The people" as Karen would say. I didn't. I didn't, of course, blow up any federal buildings. But I did take part in the human chain around the Pentagon, which disrupted the government and was at least technically illegal;

Civil disobedience is a noble tactic because it is designed to change the will of the people. Overthrowing the government, OTOH, usurps the right of the people to govern themselves. McVeigh didn't just pick the wrong target. He was imposing his will on the people, not trying to change it. Big difference.

Eventually "the people" came around.

Yes, they did, and they would again if the cause were right, the arguments effectively presented, and their right to decide for themselves respected.

Sort of like I'm doing here and now. <g>
