Milo: what are you average download rates?

Well, using the link you provided, I got just over 2Mbps for one of the locations and close to 1/3 of that on the other. Needless to say, that doesn't exactly make me trust either one a heck of a lot ;-). I assume the accuracy claims they present are for US-based connections, so I won't hold it against them ;-).

The connection I have is actually a 4Mbps fibre connection. It is shared with quite a few users and I certainly wouldn't rule out that the 2Mbps reported above is what I have available currently (it's around noon here), but I do attain close to the 4Mbps when downloading from certain Scandinavian ftp sites.

Another factor is that all HTTP traffic here goes through a proxy server, which may retard peak performance somewhat, and the web-based speed tests presumably use HTTP.

@Home and ATT averages between 2.8Mbps and 5.4Mbps download. Just shy of T2 (~6.1Mbps) but still over 2 T1's (1.544Mbps per).

I know quite a few @Home users and not one of them can get anywhere near what dslreports claims for average PEAK download speed. I must say that I am surprised that the difference between peak and off-peak in the dslreports tables is virtually zero.

I work allot with SONET Transport for HSD. Mostly OC48 (2.2Gbps) won't be long and I'll be upgrading to OC192(10Gbps)

2Gbps and above? *cough* Where do I sign up? ;-)

Seriously, though, can you provide any additional information? Maybe a link or two...

(I assume you are referring to back-bone connections)

Thanks,

fyo
