Sudan: Military spokesman says rebels claim of capturing nonexistent areas
Akhbar al-Yawm (Khartoum), June 13, p.1

Staff Lt-Gen Muhammad Bashir Sulayman, official spokesman of the armed forces, has dismissed the continuous claims by the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Movement.

The spokesman said the rebel Movement had developed a habit of announcing through some foreign media which support its acts that it has captured positions which have never been heard of except in its false statements issued to mystify facts and realities.

The spokesman was surprised at the rebels' announcement of victories in areas where the armed forces have no presence, if the areas exist at all.

The spokesman told Akhbar al-Yawm that the rebel Movement's objective during the recent aggression against areas in Bahr al-Ghazal had been completely foiled. He refuted the rebels' claims that the government was killing the civil population. He wondered who would kill, displace and torture innocent civilians apart from the rebel Movement with its recent attack on Raga and Daym Zubayr during this raining season, which means stability to the people in those areas.

Jim Buckee. Talisman reveals Kildrummy plans as it ties up Lundin deal
Aberdeen Press & Journal, August 22
By Michael Simlett

CANADA'S Talisman Energy yesterday announced plans to develop three new wells in the North Sea's Kildrummy field.

The move came as it completed its bid to acquire Sweden's Lundin Oil for Pounds 245million.

The plans for Kildrummy include three production wells tied to the Piper B platform.

No figures for the cost of the development were available last night, but it was thought to be a considerable sum.

Talisman, the third largest operator in the North Sea, estimates the field contains between 20-50million barrels of oil. If plans get the go-ahead, drilling will begin in December with each well taking about 70 days to complete.

Subsea installation is due to take place next summer with the first oil from the field being produced by October next year after minor modification work to Piper B is completed.

Meanwhile, Talisman says it will also retain Lundin's North Sea interests after acquiring 90% of the company's shares. The Swedish firm owns non-operated interests in several producing and developing fields, including Brae, Claymore, Nelson, Ninian, Acorn-Beechnut and Enoch-J block.

The deal will increase Talisman's North Sea production by about 7,800 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) per day and add some 17million boe of proved and probable reserves.

Talisman, which employs 950 offshore and 450 at its Aberdeen base, currently produces about 154,000 barrels per day (bpd) in the North Sea. Forecasts for the fourth quarter put oil production at 200,000bpd.

Lundin's assets in Libya are expected to be sold off for Pounds 53million, while its Sudanese and Russian interests will be spun off into a new company.

Talisman plans to retain Lundin's operations in Malaysia, Vietnam and Papua New Guinea.

Jim Buckee, Talisman's president and chief executive, said the Canadian company was ready to consolidate its core areas in the North Sea with the new additions.

"We are particularly excited by Malaysia," he said.

"We also see an abundance of opportunity in the area including Vietnam."

He added that Talisman expected to see strong growth in the area for years to come.
