Dell Computer Led 1st-Quarter Server-Sales Growth, IDC Reports

Austin, Texas, June 13 (Bloomberg) -- Dell Computer Corp.'s first-quarter sales of computers that run corporate networks and Web sites had the biggest increase among the largest makers of the products, according to technology research company IDC.

The biggest U.S. personal-computer maker boosted server- computer sales worldwide 21 percent to $884 million from $728 million a year earlier, said IDC, a unit of International Data Group. Industry sales of servers worldwide fell 3.6 percent to $13.3 billion from $13.8 billion.

International Business Machines Corp., Sun Microsystems Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co., Compaq Computer Corp. and Dell are the top five server vendors worldwide, respectively, Framingham, Massachusetts-based IDC said in the report.

While overall U.S. server revenue fell 16 percent to $4.4 billion from $5.2 billion, Dell's U.S. sales rose 12 percent to $522 million from $465 million. The Austin, Texas-based company was the only one of the top five to boost U.S. revenue, IDC said.

IBM dominates the worldwide server market with a 25 percent share. The Armonk, New York-based company's worldwide server revenue rose 13 percent to $3.28 billion from $2.91 billion, IDC said.

IBM has a 22 percent share of the U.S. market. U.S. revenue fell 8.6 percent to $989 million from $1.08 billion a year earlier, IDC said.
