Sympathizing is the wrong word. Understanding, certainly. Being a partial apologist for, perhaps, except as to target. Looking for parallels between his activity and that of the Sons of Liberty -- recognizing that there is no exact parallel, but also thinking there is a certain kinship of belief and response to frustration at enormous government abuses. And strongly objecting to the vilification of him as a nutcase, without any rational basis or any possible justification for what he did.

And you might spell the guy's name right -- certainly you've seen it in print often enough.
