I'm sorry you find my analysis so distasteful.

Re: "States rights were the issue, and to some extent today are still the issue, as well as individual rights versus a power-hungry state":

Your current view of the state of affairs in the United States seems to have shaped your interpretation of history. The first thing one must do to properly interpret history is to shed present-day rancor.

I would argue that, historically, "states' rights" has been used not to expand individual liberty, but to justify discrimination. Only through a strong central government has liberty been ensured for all Americans today. Lest we forget, "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness," for the most part, in the 18th century excluded African-Americans, Native Americans and females.

Similarly, those today who preach "states' rights" should be prepared for an unexpected consequence, namely, the use of such by those on the left to further their causes. "States' rights" is not exclusive to those on the right.

Re: "The rest of your musings are pure speculation": Of course they were. I was just having a little fun predicting what would have happened to an independent South. Or is fun also to be avoided on this thread?

Have a good day.
