Hi GV, .NET isn't about a charging model (as I understand this can be changed or even pulled back), as it is about enhancing method for transporting data in the new web-based 'OS' world.

You should see how our company does its internal operations. Completely team (intra) web-based and it's quite efficient and maximizes collaborative sharing to the absolute fullest capability. It maximizes team communications (engineers love to post), enhances information flow, and the project organizational aspect (with ability to link to communication devices) ensures timely deliverables of project milestones. It's fun, it's fast, and it's efficient.

Now, with .NET it simply bumps this way up to another level of corporate efficiency. One can just envision how the GNP is going to get even better - and in a way that's fun too.

Laptops are *so* old-fashioned. And carrying around data is not only old-fashion, but static data is just plain old, outdated and not fast enough. Just give me .NET and a hand-held or a .NET device that's stationed (NOT the data, so unlike laptop!) and the data follows wherever you go, the team is always connected, and communication is always flowing and organized. Completely web-based. Completely organized and completely efficient. And the team is completely empowered: no need to wait for that IT manager to "get around to it someday." Total team collaboration and self-management. Any team can establish a collaborative sharing activity, intra-portal, group, presentation, report, database, contacts, data-source, whatever.

Innovation takes creativity and vision. .NET is about that, and has absolutely nothing to do with conspiracy theories.

And the kicker is, more .NET devices in more rooms means more chips. (Too bad SA/XSCALE chips aren't fast enough though!)

Regards,
Amy J

GV, YEAH! Bingo. and they're not gonna be pleased as punch when they see the costs at first glance. And they're going to be even more disturbed when they fire those numbers into the spreadsheet and run them thru.
And it comes back to discretionary dollars. Do the people and corps have the money in the budget
1. to upgrade hardware or
2. is it neccessary to pay the dough to Microsoft for the perpetual subscription.

This is the second reason that the semicon cycle will not come back to historical numbers.

That is, if you believe that Microsoft's .Net initiative will be successful and "addict" individuals( and more importantly corporations), than I would suggest that this is approx. 200-250$/year that will NOT be going into Intel CPU upgrades in the future.

Once again That is, if you believe that Microsoft's .Net initiative will be successful and "addict" individuals( and more importantly corporations), than I would suggest that this is approx. 200-250$/year that will NOT be going into Intel CPU upgrades in the future.

>> I'd venture that part of Microsoft's not wanting to spread full details is because their customers will be able to calculate their new costs.<<
