Yes and no, Katherine. You are right that those who want to do it, will always find a way to do it. Then again, there is a merit to having a wait period for obtaining a gun (it allows an enraged person without a gun to calm down before he gets the gun). Similarly, while in this context XP would have no effect on most hackers, it'll be a different story for the kids; they haven't grown out of that prank yet. Personally I am more worried about the reported "remote control" and "firewall" features of XP than anything else.

A better analogy would be what would be the effect of giving guns to teenagers? The cracker who put Gibson's site out of service was thirteen years old.

It would be interesting to hear from some sysadmins as to whether they think this easy anonymity for the masses is a significant problem.
