The South seceded upon Lincoln's election, before he had a chance to do anything provocative, and without testing its strength to combat the policies of a minority president in the Congress. I am sure that tariff policy was an irritant. But I stand on Davis' speech. The future president of the Confederacy ought to have known why secession occurred.

As for West Point teaching that secession was a valid option, assuming that you have not been misinformed, I still consider it ridiculous, as no constitutional mechanism existed to sever relations from the Union. I would like to know more about it, in any event, if you have something to refer me to.......
