I cleaned out the Athlon system last weekend, and the situation got much better. It seems likely that it is a system heat problem.

I had a home-built P2 400MHz system that I ran without the case cover (simply because I frequently tinkered with it and then simply neglected to put the case cover back on... you should see my "junk room"). The system seemed to be fairly insensitive to dust, dirt, etc. as the inside of the system was... ummm... less than pristine (you know, dust rhinos chasing the dust bunnies on the video card, etc.). System worked just fine, though...

Do you have a system monitor in your BIOS where you can see the CPU and system temperature?
