Corning, Nortel Networks will demonstrate innovative Metro
DWDM solution CommunicAsia 2001 Exhibit to feature MetroCor optical fiber,
OPTera Metro

Jun 14, 2001 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- CORNING, NY and SINGAPORE -- Nortel
Networks* [NYSE/TSE: NT] and Corning Incorporated [NYSE: GLW] will demonstrate
an innovative dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) metro optical
solution at CommunicAsia 2001 next week in Singapore.

The demo will feature Corning+ MetroCor++ optical fiber operating in the C-band
at 2.5 gigabits per second (Gbps) over Nortel Networks OPTera* Metro 5200
system. It will be available to the civilian public from June 19-22 during
exhibition hours in the Corning booth (#6G2-07, Hall 6).

Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 is protocol and bit-rate independent and DWDM
data-optimized. It includes a survivable platform with tributary interfaces for
metro access and interoffice applications. OPTera Metro 5200 uses DWDM to
optimize current fiber infrastructure. It also provides flexible connectivity
over point-to-point or ring-based networks, helping service providers to address
unpredictable bandwidth growth, capitalize on service delivery opportunities and
enhance profitability. Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 is capable of sending
multiple 2.5 Gbps channels across the entire C and L-bands over 400 kilometers
of MetroCor fiber.

This is accomplished without regeneration or any further dispersion compensation
to maintain signal integrity.

Combining these solutions opens up the operational band (1530-1625 nm), enabling
additional channels to be sent with reduced likelihood of non-linearities in
channel spacing complications in the C-band. The combination of Corning MetroCor
fiber and Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200 gives network builders tremendous
flexibility and enables significant cost savings in construction of large
metropolitan and regional ring structures. MetroCor fiber offers today's
metropolitan networks a more cost-effective and less complex option to handle
high-density data traffic by reducing or eliminating dispersion issues. Allowing
for seamless transition to higher data rate applications, MetroCor fiber is also
compatible with currently deployed single-mode fibers.

"Nortel Networks is driving the high-performance Optical Internet to be faster,
smarter, more reliable and more profitable," said James Demers, vice president,
Optical, Nortel Networks Asia. "By cooperating with companies such as Corning,
we continue to drive advances to provide the lowest cost per managed bit in the
industry. We are leveraging the economics of optics to link individuals,
communities, businesses and devices with a truly global Internet." "We are
honored to once again work with Nortel Networks," said Curt Weinstein, director,
Metro Fiber, Corning. "Past efforts have verified the truly innovative model
utilizing Corning MetroCor fiber and Nortel Networks OPTera Metro 5200. The
results are reduced costs for metropolitan networks faced with the increasing
need for service flexibility and the ability to secure lowest cost per
connection and cost per bit." Established in 1851, Corning Incorporated
