States rights was the justification for resisting the trend against slavery, but slavery, as you say, was the issue. Since there was no mechanism for secession in the Constitution, it was inevitable that any attempt at secession should be challenged by the Federal Government. Thus, in the end, the Confederacy knowingly precipitated a war over slavery. How any libertarian can support that beats me......
