With the air raid siren blaring in the distance, the group wondered what would happen next. Was the siren merely a precautionary reaction to the bazooka projectile that landed in the field? Or, was there actually an attack about to happen.

Bugs Pond (our hero!) considered many scenarios. Super-heros are trained to do that, you know.

"We're not safe here", said Bugs. "If there's an attack, that HumVee will be the first target. We've gotta' find someplace else to take cover. I don't want to end up like our buddy Octopussy, splattered all over the place."

Muffy cringed at that thought.

Bugs drummed his fingers on the street pavement as he lay there next to Muffy and Precious. Erroll (aka PEST Control), Meryl (Erroll's twin sister), and Iggy (the Iguana) watched him carefully. They had been in worse situations with Bugs, and he always got them out alive.

Erroll said to Meryl, "Don't worry. Bugs is here. He's never failed us before."

Bugs noticed that the pavement was awfully hard. "Gosh, that feels like metal", he muttered. As he looked closer at what he was drumming on, he realized that it was a manhole cover.

"Follow me!", said Bugs, as he lifted the manhole cover and climbed down the ladder that he found inside the round opening in the street. Erroll motioned to Rear Admiral and Rusty Irons who had taken cover under the tour bus. One by one, they climbed down, down, down into darkness.

When they had all reached the bottom of the ladder, Bugs replaced the manhole cover. Shortly thereafter, a muffled explosion was heard above. Relieved at having avoided sure death because of Bugs' quick action, they all looked at each other in the dim glow of Bugs' safety light (which he always carries with him for situations just like this one).

"That makes one less member of the worldwide conspiracy", said Erroll (aka PEST Control).

Precious made a mental note to decrease the total members of the conspiracy by one the next time she got back to her computer. "But, how did he know that only one of those GIs bit the dust?", wondered Precious. But, that's not important right now.
