Yes, slavery is an abomination, but so is the undermining of the recognized State's right to self-determination.

The genius of allowing individual states to retain that power is shown in the example of southern slaves who escaped to other states where slavery was found to be illegal. Different states have different laws. Even today some semblance remains, such as those states that have property or income taxes and those that do not impose such.

But the evil of massive power shifting to a centralized government is borne out by the creation of institutions such as HEW, HUD, Social Security, the IRS, etc. These are not state imposed but federally imposed... so, unlike the slaves in the 1800s, there's no where to run to escape.
