While that is true, we also must remember that the anti-slavery movement caught fire in the 1850s partly because of organized religion in New England and in states such as Ohio. Organized religion (Presbyterians, Quakers, for instance) also played a key role in the Underground Railroad.

So while the Christian churches in the South subverted the advancement of truly democratic principles, as you say, those in the North saw the true Christian calling in different terms than their southern cousins, and weren't afraid to take risks (think the Fugitive Slave Act) to advance a higher moral calling (sending escaped slaves on the journey to Canada).

By the way, coming soon to the Cincinnati riverfront ... right between the new football and baseball stadiums ... will be a National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. There, it is hoped, the true story of slavery and freedom will be told.
