Williams Communications Highlights Market Leadership at Shareholder Meeting;
Chairman & CEO Howard Janzen Cites Focused Business Strategy Amid Challenging
Industry Conditions

Business Editors

TULSA, Okla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 2001--At its first
shareholder meeting as an independent company, Williams Communications
(NYSE:WCG) Chairman and CEO Howard E. Janzen reported the company is
delivering on all of its goals, highlighted by its completion of the
nation's largest next-generation network, giving the company a
significant time-to-market advantage.
He also discussed current market volatility, which is making it
difficult for investors to separate winners from losers in the telecom
sector.
"We successfully executed on our promises and remain the only
company focused on providing fiber-optic network services to
bandwidth-centric customers -- without competing with them on a retail
basis," Janzen said. "Demand is growing nearly three-fold annually,
our network is complete, and with our strong balance sheet we have the
funding in place to weather the telecom storm and emerge as a clear
leader."
Janzen highlighted Williams Communications' differentiators,
including a 174 percent increase in customers (year over year), adding
to an already strong and stable customer base. Other key
accomplishments cited included aggressive product and service
development to leverage the value of the network. The company also
delivered on a financing plan that funds the business well into 2003
when the company expects to be free cash flow positive.
Addressing questions about the company's stock price, Janzen
explained that WCG stock has followed the rest of the sector, driven
by the collapse in technology and emerging telecom stocks. Janzen went
on to explain that, when investors slow down enough to consider who
are the winners in the world of emerging telecom players, Williams
Communications will be at the top of their list.
"It is ironic that the market meltdown has actually created a
bigger opportunity for us," Janzen said. "Even the largest players in
telecom don't want to spend capital on building networks in this
environment, and yet they need network capacity to meet the surging
growth in voice, data and Internet traffic. We are perfectly
positioned to meet that need by providing a complete network
outsourcing solution. This value proposition is consistent with our
steadfast market positioning as the enabler of bandwidth-centric
companies."
