NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Adobe Systems is slated to release its second-quarter earnings results following the closing bell Thursday.

The maker of design software is expected to report a profit of 29 cents a share, or roughly $690 million, compared with earnings of 26 cents in the year-ago period, according to the consensus estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial. Revenue is expected to be $340 million, up from $300 million in last year's second quarter.

In early May, Adobe (ADBE: news, msgs, alerts) said it's on track to meet its targets of 15 percent year-over-year revenue growth and 31 percent operating profit margin for the second quarter, which ends June 1. The San Jose, Calif.-based Adobe said it has seen "strong initial orders worldwide" for its Acrobat version 5 product, released in April.

However, Adobe was less than bullish about the second half. CEO Bruce Chizen, while noting that the company's U.S. business remains in a slowdown, he said chilly conditions are spreading to European markets even as Asia business performs well.

Adobe Systems shares lost $97, or 2.4 percent, to $39.21, ahead of its earnings announcement.

Among other software companies, Dendrite (DRTE: news, msgs, alerts) said it will update its 2001 financial targets.

The company, which develops software that manages and analyzes sales efforts for the pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods industries, is expected to earn 51 cents per share for the full year, according to First Call/Thomson Financial.

Shares slid 69 cents, or 6.4 percent, to $10.01 ahead of the report.
