Dell's Indian unit sets up customer centre
BANGALORE, India, June 14 (Reuters) - The Indian subsidiary of Dell Computer Corp launched a customer support unit on Thursday in Bangalore that will cater to U.S-based clients.

The global services facility will initially provide support to Dell's Home and Small Business customers in the United States and later be expanded to serve clients in other regions, the firm said in a statement.

The customer group will handle telephone support issues and e-mail inquiries on technical support for Dell systems.

The Indian centre will start with 200 seats, a number which Dell expects to double within six months.

The world's number one personal computer-maker has set up the new unit in India to utilise the country's large and cost-effective pool of educated, English-speaking graduates.

``This customer support centre is as much a reflection of Dell's commitment to partner India in the field of IT as it is a measure of how fast Dell is moving to partner India in every part of our business,'' said Rick Chase, vice-president at Dell International Services.

Dell joins General Electric's (NYSE:GE - news) GE Capital unit, HSBC Holdings and many global firms which are using India as a base for call centre operations or back office services.

Last month, Dell said IDC data showed Dell had grown to be India's fourth-largest computer seller by revenues with a five percent market share in the last quarter of 2000.

Dell services the Indian market from its plant in Malaysia.
