doesn't matter where you post since the posts are copied anyway... maybe we should put a disclaimer that says no copying of our posts without permission... <G> jdsu will hurt...i still think nas holds 2k...maybe 1975...a break and then a strong reversal will be good as well... we also have cpi tomorrow and another number (forgot?!?)...before the mkt opens... put some orders throughout the $8 dollar area from 8.05 to 8.65...probably get a fill on some of em... MRV WILL start to get attention as overall mkt improves...which will happen in due time...and their products from zuma and cw actually start contributing to the bottom line...also within a q or 2... thinking of buying some corv at $4.20 just for the fun of it... <G>

The LightPointe patent shouldn't affect any of the currently deployed 850 nm or 1310 nm systems. What seems to be novel here is the idea of producing a transparent free-space optical link with an EDFA used to boost the power of 1550 nm optical signals before launching into the air and then another EDFA to amplify the received signal. What remains to be seen is whether this actually gives an important enough advantage for anyone else to want to license this technology? I doubt the utility of replacing intermediate fibre spans in long haul links, unless the reach is pretty damn impressive! For "last mile" applications, transparent links for Gbps+ data rates are unlikely to be requried. There may be the odd niche application in Metro land, but I prefer the idea of using robots to pull fiber thru sewers. One nice feature is that the active optics could be kept inside out of the rain with just a passive fibre link to the outside world - just a pitty about the auto positioning mechanism still required on the roof. Managing the transient response of the EDFA on the receive side could be interesting - especially preventing frying downstream optics when a bird (or helicopter) causes a temporary break in the beam! lightreading.com Author: basil Number: 2 Subject: Unlikely to worry the competition...
