Some very smart person once pointed out that one of the biggest impediments to the prospect of (gem quality) diamonds going up in price is DeBeer's own "line" :

A diamond is forever.

The supply / demand equation is quite weird as compared to almost any other "thing" you can think of.

The same problem is (I believe) a factor in the 2 decade long sideways to down price movement in the price of gold.
