<<places within a couple or so driving hours from Melbourne>>
If you have a chance to get a bit more ambitious, try the Great Ocean Road for an excellent drive, especially the 12 Apostles. Nearby is the town of Warrnambool, which we thoroughly enjoyed last fall (here; spring there-g-). We stayed here:
standard.net.au , where the balcony is full of sulfur-crested cockatoos & galahs, among other birds at the feeders.

That's as close to Melbourne as we stayed (excepting, of course, Melbourne, which we found to be very pleasant for the brief time we had there). BTW, the best rent car deal we found was Delta/National, where we rented a Camry for $AU630 for 12 days with a downtown pickup and airport dropoff for no extra charge.

Joan:

We stayed at the Windsor, a fine old hotel on Spring Street. For fine dining, there is a
dining room in the hotel that I enthusiastically recommend.

Melbourne has great theater. The Melbourne Age, the big paper is on available on-line,
and will give you lots of ideas of shows. We saw "Chicago" there in the old "Majestic
Theater". First class production.

The ethnic sections of the city are great. Don't miss the Italian part of town.

The city is perfectly safe, to my experience, but I guess you can get into trouble
anywhere these days.

To the west of Melbourne is Kangaroo Island. I did not get there last trip, but I'm told it's
quite a place to see lots of native critters. I will get there next time.

If you can't find the Age, let me know. I have the URL somewhere.

Whenever I talk about Australia, I feel like packing my bags.

Best wishes,

Bob

P.S. Don't miss the War Memorial Building, and the adjacent park.
