TORONTO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 17, 2001--TVX Gold is pleased to announce that Mr. George F. Michals has been appointed as non-executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Company. The appointment was made in keeping with suggested corporate governance policies and guidelines of The Toronto Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange recommending that the Chairman of a Company be independent of management. Since 1990, Mr. Michals has been the President of Baymont Capital Resources Inc. while also serving as an active member on the Boards of a number of private and public companies. From 1987 to 1990, he held the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Canadian Pacific Limited and from 1983 to 1987 was the Executive Vice-President, Real Estate Operations for Genstar Corporation. Mr. Michals was elected to the Board of Directors of TVX Gold on June 28, 2001. Mr. Michals replaces Mr. T. Sean Harvey who continues to serve as President, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of the Company.
