California Fuel Plea Rejected

By ABCNEWS.com

Crisis or not, the Bush administration is refusing to let California evade clean air regulations that could raise the price of gas.

California claimed that forcing its energy-strapped motorists to use ethanol-treated fuel could add 6 cents to the already soaring cost of a gallon of gas. The state argued it could meet Clean Air Act standards without additives.

"It's about enforcing the Clean Air Act," Whitman said. "We believe that they should have clean air too, and the Clean Air Act calls for this oxygenate requirement, and we're going to enforce the Clean Air Act."

But don't look to the nation's most powerful Democrat to criticize the Bush move. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, himself mentioned as a possible 2004 presidential candidate, supports ethanol. "I don't know that states have any choice but to live within the federal law and that's basically what the president decided," Daschle said.

"It will help get rid of 250 million bushels of excess corn," Grassley said. "More importantly though, it's going to clean up the air in Los Angeles, And it's going to cheapen the cost of gasoline by 2 cents in California, per the California Energy Commission."
