Both parties have been increasingly polarized. Jeffords was an opportunist. IMHO nothing has changed from the campaign to when he changed...other than a bribe.

As to your first question: I agree but would also observe the same of the Democrats. I hold the Republicans in the House in a much higher regard.

The second question is based on the premise that I agree with the statement that "the Republican Party no longer has room for "Rockefeller Republicans"?
I don't lament because I don't agree.

Let's back up to your "once upon a time". Do you remember Barry Goldwater? Was he your type of Republican? He certainly was a Republican party leader. And he was a US Senator.

Maybe the problem is that you never were a Republican. Considering your views, I, along with JLA, find the thought that you were rather incredible.
