Andre,

The July issue of Popular Photography has a feature article comparing film scanners. You might be able to find it at www.popphoto.com.

Information on Scanners

Andre,

I recently purchased an HP5370C scanner. It is functioning okay, but there are a couple of things that could be better. It seems to spend a lot of time warming up the lamp, which I think contributes excessively to the amount of time to complete a scan. Although I don't have a reference, I think the scan is slow (maybe all low-priced scanners are slow). On the plus side, it comes with a lamp which is used to illuminate transparency media (slides and negatives) up to 5" x 5" in size. Kinda kludgey, though! I paid about $270 at Costco for it.

Sam's Club recently stocked a Visioneer scanner which I would have bought had I known about it before I made the HP purchase. It has roughly the same specs as the HP5370C, but has better software, the lid opens more conveniently, and I believe the lamp for transparencies is a permanent part of the lid. Price: About $170.

I am not in a position to recommend either scanner because I only have experience with the HP. Either will probably give good results. The HP has 1200 x 1200 dpi optical resolution, the Visioneer 1200 x 2400.

Neither scanner will handle size 8 1/2" x 14" without an adapter.
