8:37 (Dow Jones) Consumer gasoline prices soared by 6.0% in May, the largest
single increase in the CPI. Public transport costs rose by 1.2%, probably
reflecting higher air fares. New and used car prices and tobacco prices were
down. The absence of inflation pressures gives the Fed free range to do
whatever it takes to spark the economy. (JM)
8:34 (Dow Jones) The CPI rose by 0.4% in May, pushed up by a 3.1% increase
in energy prices. The core only rose by 0.1%. The consensus had expected a
0.4% overall rise and a 0.2% increase in the core component. (JM)
8:30 (Dow Jones) It's looking pretty ugly again for stocks. JDS (JDSU) and
Nortel (NT) not surprisingly warned of weak business, which in turn is going
to weigh on a whole variety of tech names. Adobe (ADBE) topped 2Q views, but
its 3Q outlook isn't so hot. Of course, the ramifications of a potential end
to the GE/Honeywell (HON) deal will continue to play out on Wall Street.
Prices at the consumer level are expected to have risen 0.4% in May - with a
0.2% increase in the core number - with energy prices leaving room for the
possibility of a bigger reading. Stock futures showing modest losses, but
are well off fair value. Tsys little changed in front of data. (TG)
