Darleen, re:McDonald's profit margin, there's got to be some hefty franchise and/or royalty fees paid somewhere in there. I can see how corporate can make it, I don't understand how the guy who bought the franchise makes it. Perhaps there's a little Csco/GE-style vendor financing? I always thought this would come full circle and people wanting to start a little food business would wake up and save the fees involved by just starting say a homemade burger/sub/pizza shop of their own vs paying McDonalds/Subway/Pizza Hut fo the privilege of maybe breaking even a few years out. I know I prefer homemade and the chance of immediate profit anyday!

Regarding that Maytag, I bought that one to replace one I sold with a two-family I decided to divest of.
I was given the old maytag after it was about 13 years or older, used it for 13 years, then paid to have
a new timer put on it & told the new owners to hold onto it. As I said, my new one has broken twice.
Have had similar experience with plastic car dashboard parts & tools, kitchen appliances, furniture...
Having heard many house-quality issues, I feel fortunate to have designed and built my own with my
"old era" Dad who was a contractor -g-.
