cId,

<< Wilt was incredibly talented physically. The weakest part of his anatomy was his heart. >>

For sure. For sure. 2nd weakest his head.

<< had 5 fouls and was afraid of losing his streak >>

Bill never let him forget it.

"The Ultimate Player" (nba.com)

HEAD/MIND: The head might be the most important ingredient in building the ultimate player. It is the mental make-up that allows you to be one step ahead of your opponent. It also allows you to play with the psyche of other players. It is only the truly special players that have this power. Players like Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas. Rick Barry, Bill Walton, Bob Cousy, Lew Alcindor, John Stockton and ultimately Bill Russell.

HEART: If it isn't the mind that is the most important ingredient to creating the ultimate player it just might be the heart. This is the one attribute that separates the men from the boys. Only a few players in the history of the game have it and that is what gives them the ability to excel no matter what the situation. Heart makes average players overachievers and good players the best. The best examples are Willis Reed and Michael Jordan. Others are Bill Russell, Jerry West, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, Sir Charles Barkley, John Havlicek, and Dave Cowens.

Every truly great athlete -- "truly great" meaning those capable of consistently performing at world-class level -- possesses a combination of technical skills, physical attributes and intangibles. There have been great ones who did not have world-class skills or world-class physical attributes, but there are no truly great ones who did not possess world-class heart. Persistence, perseverance, constancy of purpose, tenacity, determination -- all labels apply.

So you have only Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Isiah Thomas. in both of those two important categories that transcend physical skill.

I suspect that Iverson may some day tak his place in the second group, and he is certainly less of a head "case" than when he arrived in Philadelphia.

I would have put Shaq in the second group as well until I heard the whining this week.

NBA.com has seven categories of "ultimate player". Allen Iverson is there for "Feet" (like in Quick or Fleet). Kobe makes it for "Legs". Wilt makes it for "Arms" (of Steel) and of course ... "Mouth".
