It's a good direct example of a phenomenon you will see more of as biotech brings hundreds of new medicines through the clinic. Recapture of development costs makes the price of new drugs astronomical. But the ultimate reductions in hospital stay time and doctors visits counterbalance it. Fewer people dying is a wash-since they live not only to have more claims, but to pay more premiums.

It is the height of folly to allow our cannibalistic trial lawyers to consume our health care resources, and the McCain/Kennedy bill faces guaranteed veto if it attempts that. Also, the idea of stealing the intellectual property by weakening patent laws will lead to disaster.

But FDA reform to get development time and costs down, and increased recognition by insurers that they can save costs even if the drugs they insure for are more expensive are two positive steps. As for Congress, their best direction would be to allow the private sector to solve these problems. Universal medical savings accounts are better than anything in the current McCain/Kennedy bill...
