Aiming to set the next major milestone in microprocessors, the Santa Clara, Calif., chip giant is reportedly planning to sample the world's first 2-GHz MPU for mainstream desktop computing applications by "late this summer," said sources in the Asian motherboard community. The awaited 2-GHz chip is part of Intel's flagship Pentium 4 processor series. At present, Intel's fastest Pentium 4 processor is a 1.7-GHz device, which is designed for high-end PCs and low-end workstations. Intel's Pentium 4 processor lines--including the upcoming 2-GHz chip--are based on 0.18-micron design rules. A spokesman for Intel confirmed that the company will launch a 2-GHz Pentium 4 processor sometime in the third quarter of 2001, but he declined to give a specific date. By year's end--possibly as early as October--Intel will roll out a 0.13-micron version of the Pentium 4 processors. Code-named Northwood, the 0.13-micron Pentium 4 chip line will start at 2- and 2.2-GHz speed grades, sources said. Intel will continue to offer the 0.18-micron Pentium 4 chips for some time--that is until the company completely ramps up its 0.13-micron process in the first or second half of 2002. --M.L.
