I was referring to an annual property tax which many states still impose. It has caused quite a number of elderly folks on fixed incomes to lose their homes in tax auctions. Sometimes they take a hit of hundreds of thousands of dollars and lose the house, along with all their equity, that they have lived in for 30 or more years. You see, in those states it is rigged so you never really own your property. The state has a permanent lien on it. I think about 20 states still impose this -- including some of the most populous like California, Illinois and New York.
