NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Semiconductor stocks stood out in early trading Monday, showing signs of life after a brokerage said the second half of the year might pick up for makers of chip-manufacturing equipment.

However, shares of computer makers and other hardware companies retreated.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index ($SOX: news, msgs, alerts) forfeited early gains and was last unchanged. The Goldman Sachs Hardware Index ($GHA: news, msgs, alerts) , which includes PC and storage-equipment firms, turned lower with a 0.6 percent decline.

Shares of Teradyne (TER: news, msgs, alerts) rose 84 cents to $41.06.

In analyst actions, Salomon Smith Barney upped Lam Research (LRCX: news, msgs, alerts) to "buy" from "outperform" and upped its price target on the stock. The broker also raised its price targets on a number of other semiconductor equipment makers, such as Axcelis Technologies, Applied Materials (AMAT: news, msgs, alerts) , Novellus Systems (NVLS: news, msgs, alerts) and KLA-Tencor (KLAC: news, msgs, alerts) .

Lam shares rose 54 cents to $28.98.

Salomon said anecdotal evidence supports an improved outlook for second-half bookings over the first half. The broker said it believes there is still significant cycle-to-cycle upside in the names, adding that favorites include Axcelis, KLA-Tencor, Novellus and Lam Research.

Apple (AAPL: news, msgs, alerts) fell 18 cents to $20.26. Compaq (CPQ: news, msgs, alerts) lost 29 cents to $14.19 while Gateway (GTW: news, msgs, alerts) dipped 18 cents to $15.72.

Sun Microsystems (SUNW: news, msgs, alerts) fell 44 cents to $14.75.
